This book covers the fascinating controversies surrounding the theory and its development as a contraception method behind the Iron Curtain during the 1950s and 1960s, how the method spread to the West in the 1970s, the science behind it, the traditional role of the moon in fertility and obstetrics, and the reasons why other natural birth control methods fail. The author also comes up with some rational suggestions for how the Lunar Phase Method probably works. The wide-ranging historical and scientific material is presented in greater depth than in any of the other books I’ve come across and includes the later history and little-known tests of the theory in America and the re-emergence of interest in it. A fascinating read and the only academic text there is on this topic.

Your Fertile Hours, Emily Faugno – American Federation of Astrologers

A guide to using the lunar phase cycle. Includes an analysis of a precisely timed intercourse that led to a timed birth. The second half of the book looks at famous women and their experiences with fertility & childbirth and explains how to use an astrological natal chart to increase or decrease your natural fertility. Appendix includes tables of sun-moon fertility angles for women 1940-2000. Now out of date.

Astrology of Childbirth, Doris Chase Doane – American Federation of Astrologers

Another astrological view of childbirth. The book covers such things as physical and mental diet, natal and progressed horoscopes and indications, and gender selection. A book that is more for astrologers.

The Natural Birth Control Book, Art Rosenblum – Aquarian Research Foundation

This book came out in several editions and sold thousands of copies in the 1970s. It gives practical advice on how to use all the natural birth control methods, including the lunar phase cycle for contraception, helping to conceive and how to choose the gender of your child using the lunar phase theory.

Astrological Birth Control, Sheila Ostrander & Lynn Schroeder – Prentice Hall; also published as Natural Birth Control – Bantam Books

Covers the discoveries made by Dr Eugen Jonas. The authors first wrote about this in a chapter of their book Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain (1970), which has recently been updated and republished but with little new information on Jonas’ work. Still an excellent book, although much of the information contained in it has now been superceded and expanded on in Kevin Allen’s book The Reluctant Hypothesis.
